The High PriestessTarot card meaning
- intuition
- mystery
- inner knowing
- stillness
The High Priestess upright
Quiet your mind and trust what you already sense beneath the surface. The answer lies in intuition, not analysis.
In a yes or no tarot reading: Leaning yes
You likely already sense the answer. If your gut is quietly saying yes, this card backs it — though not everything is visible yet.
The High Priestess reversed
You're ignoring your gut instinct or keeping secrets that need to come into the light. Disconnection from your inner voice is causing confusion.
In a yes or no tarot reading: Leaning no
Your instincts are being drowned out, or something important is still hidden. Acting before it surfaces works against you.
See what The High Priestess says about your situation.
The High Priestess doesn't hand you answers. She sits still, holds a half-hidden scroll and looks straight out of the card, as if to say you already know. Of all the Major Arcana, she's the one most likely to appear when the answer isn't out there to be found but inside you, waiting to be noticed.
She can be frustrating to draw if you wanted something clear. That's partly the point.
What the High Priestess card shows
A woman in a long blue robe sits between two pillars, one black and marked B, one white and marked J. The letters stand for Boaz and Jachin, the pillars said to have stood at the entrance of Solomon's Temple. Between them hangs a veil printed with pomegranates and palm leaves, hiding whatever lies behind it.
She wears a horned crown around a full moon, and a crescent moon rests at her feet. A cross sits on her chest. In her lap is a scroll with the letters TORA, partly covered by her robe, which pools at the bottom of the card almost like water.
Everything about her says threshold. She's sitting at a doorway, between dark and light, between what's shown and what's covered.
Why she keeps the scroll half hidden
The scroll is the detail people miss. It's knowledge, and she's holding it, but she isn't reading it out. That's the attitude of the whole card. Some things can't be told to you. You have to arrive at them, usually by getting quiet enough to hear what you already think.
In practice, this is the card that turns up after you've asked five friends for advice and still feel unsure, because none of them can answer a question that only you can.
The High Priestess upright: trust what you sense
Upright, she asks you to give your intuition more weight than usual. Not as magic, just as information. The uneasy feeling about a person, the pull toward one option you can't fully explain, the dream you keep coming back to. Those count.
She also favours waiting. Not every situation needs a decision this week. Sometimes the wise move is to watch, keep your plans to yourself and let more come into view.
The High Priestess reversed: ignoring your gut, or keeping secrets
Reversed, the inner voice is getting drowned out. You might be too busy, too anxious or too focused on what other people think to notice what you actually feel. Decisions made in that state tend to feel wrong later, even when they looked fine at the time.
It can also point to secrets, yours or someone else's. Something is being withheld, and the silence is starting to cost more than the truth would.
The High Priestess in love
Upright, she describes a slow, quiet attraction. A crush you haven't mentioned, a connection carried by glances and long pauses more than big declarations. If you're wondering whether someone is interested, she suggests watching what they do rather than what they say.
In a settled relationship, she points to a closeness where a lot is understood without being spoken. Reversed, the unspoken has become hidden. One of you is holding something back, or you're pretending not to see something you've already seen.
What the High Priestess says about their feelings
More than they're showing. Upright, she suggests real interest held back by caution, privacy or shyness. Reversed, they may be hiding their feelings on purpose, or they aren't being fully open about where they stand.
Work, money and the High Priestess
At work, she favours research, listening and keeping your cards close. If you're negotiating or looking for a job, don't reveal everything at once. If something about a role or a company feels off, find out more before you sign.
With money, she's cautious. Hold off on big moves until you understand what's going on. Reversed, look for what you're missing: hidden costs, fine print, a deal that isn't what it seems.
Asking the High Priestess a yes or no question
In our yes or no reading she's a leaning yes upright and a leaning no reversed, never a firm answer. That's deliberate. A card about inner knowing isn't going to settle a question for you. If you drew her, try asking yourself the question out loud and notice your first reaction before you start arguing with it.
The High Priestess as advice
Get quiet before you decide. A walk without your phone, a page of writing, a night's sleep. Then go with the answer that keeps returning, even if you can't fully explain it to anyone else.
Cards to read alongside The High Priestess

The Magician. The card before her, and her opposite. He acts and speaks. She waits and listens. Getting something right usually takes a bit of both.

The Empress. The card after. The High Priestess holds potential inside. The Empress lets it grow out into the world.

The Moon. Easily confused with her. Both deal with what's hidden, but The Moon is about fear and illusion, where the High Priestess is about a knowing you can trust.

Queen of Cups. Her closest match in the Minor Arcana: just as intuitive and perceptive, but warmer and more openly caring.
