The Moon tarot card

Major Arcana

The MoonTarot card meaning

  • illusion
  • uncertainty
  • subconscious
  • intuition

The Moon upright

Things aren't fully clear right now — you're navigating by instinct through shadow and illusion. Trust your intuition more than appearances.

In a yes or no tarot reading: Leaning no

Too much is unclear or hidden right now. Without a clearer picture, this leans away.

The Moon reversed

Confusion is starting to lift, or hidden fears and deception are finally coming to light. Anxiety may still be lingering.

In a yes or no tarot reading: Leaning yes

Confusion is lifting and the truth is surfacing. As things clear, the answer tilts toward yes.

See what The Moon says about your situation.

The Moon is the card of not seeing clearly. Everything is lit by a pale, shifting light. Shapes look like threats. Paths disappear. It's about uncertainty, illusion and the fears that come out after dark.

It's an uneasy card, but not a bad one. The Moon also rules dreams, intuition and imagination, and sometimes the only way through a confusing time is to feel your way.

What the Moon card shows

A large moon with a sleeping face in profile hangs in the sky, inside a ring of rays. Drops of light fall from it. Below, a dog and a wolf howl up at it, one tame and one wild. Two grey towers stand on either side of a path that winds away into distant hills.

At the bottom, a crayfish crawls out of a pool onto the land.

The crayfish, the dog and the wolf

The crayfish is the strangest detail on the card, and one of the most telling. It's something from the depths, crawling up into the light. Old fears, buried feelings, strange dreams. The Moon often appears when something you'd pushed down starts surfacing.

The dog and the wolf are two sides of the same animal. One has been tamed and one hasn't. Under the Moon, they're both howling. The card suggests that when you're anxious or confused, your calm, civilised self and your wilder fears can sound exactly alike. Learning which one is talking is half the work.

The Moon upright: things are not what they seem

Upright, you don't have the full picture. Someone may not be telling you everything, or you may be misreading a situation because you're tired, scared or hoping hard for one outcome. Hold off on big decisions until you can see more.

It also asks you to trust your instincts, carefully. Not every fear is a warning. But if something keeps nagging at you, it's worth checking.

The Moon at 3am

Most people know the feeling the Moon describes. It's the middle of the night, and a worry that seemed small at dinner now feels enormous. The dark makes everything look worse.

If you drew this card while anxious, remember that. Moonlight distorts. Write the worry down, go back to sleep if you can, and look at it again in daylight. A lot of it will have shrunk.

The Moon reversed: the fog starts to lift

Reversed, the confusion is clearing. A secret comes out. A misunderstanding gets sorted. Your anxiety starts to ease and things shrink back to their real size. That's why it leans yes for yes or no questions when reversed: things are coming into focus.

Sometimes the reversed Moon also means the fear is still there, just quieter. Keep paying attention to it gently, without letting it drive.

The Moon in love

In love, the Moon means mixed signals. You're not sure where you stand, what they want, or whether you're imagining things. It can mean someone is hiding something, but often it just means neither of you has said enough yet.

Don't fill the gaps with your worst fears. Ask. Reversed, the truth of the situation comes into view, and you can stop guessing.

Their feelings under the Moon

Unclear, possibly even to them. They may be confused about what they feel, or hiding it. Reversed, they're beginning to understand their own feelings, or about to be more open with you.

The Moon in career and money questions

At work, things are uncertain. Rumours, unclear expectations, office politics you can't quite read. Get things in writing and don't rely on promises. Creative, intuitive work tends to go well under the Moon, though.

With money, be careful. Read the fine print, avoid deals you don't fully understand, and watch for anything too good to be true. Reversed, hidden details come out, and you can decide with better information.

The Moon as advice

Go slowly and don't trust the first scary story your mind tells you. Ask for the facts you're missing. Wait for daylight before you decide.

  • The Sun. The card after. Everything the Moon hides, the Sun shows plainly.

  • The High Priestess. Also about what's hidden, but calmer. She knows. The Moon is still guessing.

  • Nine of Swords. The sleepless night in its sharpest form: worry that feels worse than the reality.

  • Seven of Cups. Illusions and fantasies. Lots of options, few of them real.
